Begalan
One day when Andrian going to Jakarta he meet William.
William come from Bandung. And then he ask Andrian about traditional ritual
from Banyumas. It is Begalan.
William : hy ?
what’s your name ?
Andrian : oh,
my name is Izza. Who are you ?
William : I am
William. Where do you come from ?
Andrian : I am
from Purwokerto, Banyumas. Why ?
William : Oh that’s great. I want to ask some
questions about begalan. I’ve heard that begalan is a traditional ritual from Banyumas.
I have seen it on internet but i don’t get it. Can you explain me something
about it?
Andrian : okey William, Begalan is a
traditional ritual from Banyumas which two people doing some robbery scene. But
that’s not a real rob, they just saying some quiz and jokes.
William : oh, that’s good. I just knew that
Begal means robber and begalan are performed before a marriage ceremony. But i
don’t know that’s was a robbery scene. By the way how is the robbery scene on
begalan ???
Andrian : one person from side of man going
to bride of woman’s home. He bring kitchen tools, these are ilir ( fan of
bamboo ), kukusan ( a place to cook rice ), centhong ( a tool to take rice ),
siwur ( water dipper of coconut shell) , wangkring ( a tool to bring some commodity
). The people of Banyumas call them “Brenong Kepang”. At journey person from
side of man meet a robber. Robber bring a wira sword. The Wira sword descibe a
man who is rsponsible, the courage to face related to safety.
William : ooh that’s right. I’ve read on the
internet about philosophy of “Brenong Kepang”. Ilir describe people who have
married must know about a good thing and a bad thing. Kukusan has a figurative
meaning that people who have married must strive to meet the needs as much as
possible. Next, centhong has meaning that people who have married must be able
to correct theirself. And for the next tool I don’t know. Can you explain it?
Andrian : oh right william. Your knowledge is
true. Okey next philosophy is Siwur. The philosophy of Siwur is people who have
married must keep their love to their couple or in java language is asih aja di
awur – awur. And then the philosophy of
wangkring is we have to think when we’ll make a decision. At the end of the
scene, the robber hit the Kendi ( pot for cooking rice ) by his Wira sword and
then brenong kepang share to people.
William : oh this is a unique tradition.
Thank you Andrian ...
Andrian : your
welcome. I hope we will meet again.
